Backward Poiesis Description
“Backward Poiesis” is a short horror game made by a Japanese student, and it’s based on real footage that was found. The story is about a guy called Mr. A (not his real name), who moves into a new house and finds an old video camera. When he turns it on, he sees really strange and creepy stuff recorded on it.
In the game, you get to walk around and relive the scary footage, as if you were the one behind the camera. The game is inspired by real interviews with Mr. A, who found the camera, and it even uses real audio from those interviews to make the experience feel more realistic.
The creators used Unreal Engine 5, which is also used for movies, to make the footage look exactly like it was captured by an old video camera. It’s eerie because you’re just wandering around in this weird, space without knowing what’s going on, and it gives off major “Liminal Space” and “Backrooms” vibes.
The creator admits he doesn’t fully understand Mr. A’s story either, so the game leaves it up to you to figure out what’s real or not based on the footage and what Mr. A said. It makes everything even more mysterious and creepy.
